Magnesium is the mineral nobody talks about until they're cramping at 3 a.m., grinding their teeth in their sleep, or wondering why their resting heart rate has crept up over the last year. For police officers — especially those running rotating patrol — the deficiency is nearly universal, and the reasons are baked into the job.
Chronic stress depletes magnesium. Sleep deprivation depletes magnesium. Sweat depletes magnesium. Heavy caffeine intake depletes magnesium. Check all four boxes and the math doesn't work — you cannot replace it fast enough from a normal American diet, which is already 30 to 50% below RDA.
What Magnesium Actually Does
Magnesium is a cofactor in more than 300 enzymatic reactions. The ones that matter most for a working cop:
Muscle contraction and relaxation. Calcium drives contraction; magnesium drives relaxation. Low magnesium means muscles that don't fully relax — cramping, twitches, tight neck and shoulders, jaw clenching. Sleep architecture. Magnesium modulates GABA receptors, the same inhibitory pathway benzodiazepines target. Cortisol regulation. Magnesium dampens the HPA axis. Deficiency makes the stress response louder and longer. Blood pressure. Meta-analyses show supplementation drops systolic BP by 2–4 mmHg in deficient subjects. Cardiac rhythm. Severe deficiency is a known trigger for arrhythmias.
Why Police Work Burns Through It Faster Than Most
Four mechanisms specific to law enforcement pull magnesium out of the body faster than civilian baseline. Chronic occupational stress: cortisol increases urinary magnesium excretion. Every stressful call costs magnesium directly. Sleep deprivation elevates inflammation and cortisol, both of which further deplete it. Sweat losses — duty belt, body armor, hot day, foot pursuit, K9 work, SWAT call-out. Caffeine and alcohol — both diuretics, both increase magnesium excretion.
How to Tell If You're Deficient
Standard serum magnesium tests are almost useless — less than 1% of body magnesium is in the blood. RBC magnesium is a slightly better test; aim for the upper third of the reference range, not just "normal."

The Forms — Glycinate vs Oxide vs Citrate vs Threonate
Magnesium oxide: cheap, ~4% bioavailability. Useful only as a laxative. Magnesium citrate: 25–30% bioavailability. Mildly laxative at higher doses. Fine general option. Magnesium glycinate: high bioavailability, well tolerated, not laxative. Glycine itself has mild calming effects. The default for cops. Magnesium L-threonate: the only form shown to cross the blood-brain barrier efficiently. Expensive — useful as an add-on, not a replacement.
Dosing, Timing, and What to Expect
RDA is 400–420mg of elemental magnesium per day for adult men. For someone deficient and actively losing more, the practical replacement dose is 300–500mg of elemental magnesium per day. Read the label carefully — "magnesium glycinate 1,000mg" usually means roughly 100–150mg of elemental magnesium. The elemental number is what counts.
Timing: 200–400mg elemental as glycinate 30–60 minutes before bed. Optionally, 100–200mg as malate or threonate with breakfast. If you get loose stools, drop the dose or switch the form.
