The pre-workout aisle is loud. Neon labels, names like Mesomorph, Wrecked, Bucked Up, Total War, Psychotic. Promises of "skin-tearing pumps," "tunnel-vision focus," and "explosive energy." For a first responder squeezing training in before a 24, after a 24, or on a rare full day off, the appeal is obvious.
But what's in pre-workout supplements is rarely what the front of the label suggests. The pattern: a few clinically validated ingredients underdosed, buried inside a proprietary blend alongside filler compounds that do little or nothing — sometimes with stimulants stacked aggressively enough to cause real cardiovascular issues. And for drug-tested personnel, contamination risk is real.
The Ingredients That Actually Work (When Dosed Correctly)
Caffeine. The most studied ergogenic aid in existence. Effective dose: 3–6mg per kg of body weight. For an 85kg first responder, that's 255–510mg, with most studies clustering around 200–400mg.
L-Citrulline (or citrulline malate). Increases plasma arginine and nitric oxide production. Effective dose: 6–8g of L-citrulline or 8g of citrulline malate. Most pre-workouts contain 2–4g — half the studied dose, half the effect.
Beta-alanine. Buffers muscle acidity, extends time to fatigue in efforts lasting 1–4 minutes. Effective when total daily dose reaches 3.2–6.4g, taken consistently over weeks. Single-dose use mostly produces tingles without the performance benefit.
Creatine monohydrate. Works through tissue saturation over time. 3–5g daily. Many pre-workouts include a sub-3g dose — useless if it's your only source.
Betaine anhydrous (TMG). Modest evidence for power output. Effective dose: 2.5g/day. Sodium and electrolytes. Underrated. 300–500mg sodium pre-workout supports plasma volume.
Common Filler Ingredients That Don't Do Much
Compounds with weak evidence at the doses included: taurine at 500–1,000mg (research uses 1–6g daily for weeks), L-tyrosine at 500–1,000mg (studies use 100–300mg/kg), agmatine sulfate (almost no human performance data), Alpha-GPC underdosed at 50–150mg vs the effective 300–600mg, BCAAs (largely unnecessary if you eat adequate protein).
The proprietary blend strategy lets brands include a long list of underdosed compounds, making the label look impressive while keeping cost down.

The Ingredients with Actual Risk Flags
DMAA (1,3-dimethylamylamine). Banned by the FDA after reports of cardiac events and deaths. Still appears under names like geranium extract, methylhexanamine, DMHA, octodrine analogues. Avoid this class.
Synephrine (bitter orange). Above 50mg, especially stacked with caffeine and yohimbine, raises BP and heart rate substantially.
Yohimbine. Causes anxiety, palpitations, and elevated BP in a non-trivial percentage of users — especially problematic stacked with caffeine.
Higenamine. Beta-2 agonist banned by WADA. Has caused failed drug tests in athletes.
Excessive total caffeine. Some pre-workouts contain 350–400mg per serving. Stack that with station coffee and you're easily into 800–1,000mg/day.
Contamination and Drug Testing Risk
For first responders subject to fitness-for-duty drug testing, a career-ending positive test from a contaminated pre-workout is a documented event, not theoretical. Mitigation: only use products with NSF Certified for Sport or Informed Sport certification, avoid proprietary blends, and avoid anything sold through unofficial channels.
How to Build a Clean Pre-Workout
Standard stack 30 minutes before training: caffeine 150–300mg; L-citrulline 6–8g; beta-alanine 3–5g (taken daily); creatine monohydrate 5g (timing isn't critical); betaine anhydrous 2.5g; sodium 300–500mg; optional 300mg alpha-GPC for focus. Clinically dosed, fully transparent. No proprietary blends. No DMAA cousins.
For shift workers: keep total caffeine under 400mg on training days, with no caffeine in the 8 hours before sleep. Training at night before a sleep cycle? Swap to a caffeine-free version — citrulline, creatine, and beta-alanine don't disrupt sleep.
The bottom line
Most of what's in a typical tub is validated ingredients at sub-clinical doses, decorative filler, and occasionally risky stimulants — packaged with theatrical branding. Skip the neon tub.
